Information for Veterans

What is a Veteran Friendly GP practice?

Veteran-friendly GP practices are accredited by the RCGP to better identify, understand, and support veterans by coding their service history, having trained staff, and knowing specialist veteran services like TILS, ensuring priority care for service-related conditions. You can find them by checking their website or using the RCGP's map, and if your GP isn't accredited, you should still inform them you are a veteran for better care.

What makes a GP practice veteran-friendly?

  • Ask patients registering with a surgery if they have ever served in His Majesty’s Armed Forces.
  • Code it on the GP computer system.
  • Have a clinical lead on veterans in the surgery. This should be a registered health care professional, but could be a nurse or paramedic, not just a GP.
  • Have the clinical lead undertake dedicated training, attend NHS Armed Forces network meetings, stay up to date with the latest research and innovations and ensure that the practice is meeting the health commitments of the Armed Forces Act. They should also be available to provide advice to colleagues, as well as possibly seeing veterans themselves.
  • Eligible practices should have a CQC ‘good’ rating or higher.
